Understanding gender recognition in Sweden
Sweden has historically been progressive on LGBTQ+ rights. While the system has undergone significant reform in 2025, the process still involves application and assessment through Socialstyrelsen rather than pure self-declaration.
Sweden’s system
Reformed in 2025 but still involves application to Socialstyrelsen, Legal Council review, and several months processing time.
Our self-declaration advantage
Sweden’s process: several months with assessment. Our certificate: 5 working days, pure self-declaration, no assessment.
Non-binary recognition
Sweden’s system only recognizes male/female. Our certificate can record non-binary identities.

Sweden’s gender recognition system
Sweden’s system is administered by Socialstyrelsen (National Board of Health and Welfare). The 2025 reforms simplified the process but it still involves application and assessment.
Current system (post-2025 reform)
- Application to Socialstyrelsen
- Simplified assessment process
- No requirement for surgery or sterilization
- No requirement for hormone treatment
- No requirement for diagnosis
- Age requirement: 16+ years
The official process
To change your legal gender in Sweden:
- Submit application to Socialstyrelsen
- Application reviewed by Legal Council (Rättsliga rådet)
- Receive decision (approval or request for additional information)
- If approved, gender marker updated in population register
Processing time: Several months (varies by caseload)
Cost: Free
Age: 16+ years
What changes with official recognition
- Population register (folkbokföring)
- Personal identity number (personnummer) — last digit changes
- Passport
- ID card
- All official documents
Identity number change
Sweden’s personnummer encodes gender in the final digits. When legal gender changes, your identity number changes, which can cause administrative complications.
Non-binary recognition
Sweden’s official system currently only recognizes male (man) and female (kvinna). Non-binary gender markers are not available in Swedish official documents.
Historical note
Sweden was the first country in the world to allow legal gender change (1972), but the original law required sterilization, which was only removed in 2013. Sweden has been modernizing its approach, with significant reforms in 2025, though the process still involves more steps than Nordic neighbors Norway and Denmark.
